4.5 mile run

went to the gym to swim...but they did some maintenance on the pool over the weekend and the water temp was 60 degrees - that's COLD! way too cold for me to get in. luckily i was still in my running clothes, so i still worked out for an hour...

10 minutes on the rowing machine
15 minutes on the elliptical
10 minutes on rowing machine
15 minutes on the elliptical

{i'm ADD on those cardio machines at the gym...and i was also trying to workout my chest/shoulders like i would have if i had been able to swim but still get my heart rate up}

then i did...

15 pushups/50 crunches 4 times (total of 60 pushups and 200 crunches)

12.5 mile run
for the record - it was an awful run...so hard...i was dying...but i pulled it out thanks to the ladies that run with me. i love good runs. but it's also nice to know i can pull out a long run even when it's hard.

doing my best to recover now...and move on with our weekend!

1 hour spinning {interval stuff...}

Monday, February 15, 2010

12 mile run
200 crunches (4 sets of 50)
60 pushups (4 sets of 15)

Sunday, February 14, 2010

nothing.
rest day :-)

Saturday, February 13, 2010

nothing.
i'm either all or nothing.
and saturdays = long runs and it would just be painful.
either go to the gym and run 12 miles on a treadmill (NOT happening)
or try to run 12 miles outside where there's only 1 lane cleared in the snow all around town and make all the drivers mad.

i just couldn't do it.

monday is a holiday.
maybe i'll get a long run in then?
but i don't think there's going to be much melting between now and then...

i'm trying to tell myself that "rest" is just as good for my body as a good long run.
it's not as good for my attitude, though...

Friday, February 12, 2010

ran 5 miles.
swam 1 1/2 miles.

1 hour Firm workout

{trying not to freak out that i'm "out of my routine!}

videos

what video's do i use in my basement?? {here ya go, Holly!}

i have 2 full sets of The Firm VHS (oh, yes!) tapes!
i LOVE LOVE LOVE them....i've used them for years (obviously...since they are vhs!)
i have to do them on this little tv that is like 8 inches and has a vcr built into it.
comical.

i also use The Biggest Loser DVD...a friend gave it to me as a gift (and i LOVE it!)
it has 5 or 6 sections - each one 20 minutes long (low cardio...high cardio...boot camp...strength and sculpt) and you "create" your own workout with them.
it's cool.

the only other video i use is a Denise Austin one.
it's called "Fit and Fabulous for every age" or something like that.
it's cheesy...but a great combination of cardio and strength training.

12 mile run (from 5:15-7:15 am...so does it count for more?? :-)
did my long run today because of the 2 feet of snow that is falling outside.

1 1/2 mile swim (34 + 17 laps...too tired to add them up :-)) in 55 minutes (including the conversation i had with the man i was sharing a lane with. he was so cute! at least 30 years older than me. and gave me a run for my money! with his snorkel breathing thing and all! he said to me at the end, "go get 'em kid!" KID! love it!)

day 1 in writing

this is nowhere near day 1 of my "training"...but i don't know how else to start this!

we're just going to dive in with today's workout:

5 mile run
45 minutes cross training (workout video in my basement)...a little cardio...mostly strength training

my goal

this goal has been in my head and heart for awhile...

i am doing an international triathlon on august 14, 2010!

we all know i love to exercise.
i always have.
and i've grown to love it even more the last couple years.
i became a runner shortly after having bailey.

and i became a swimmer 2 years after that.

i couldn't do either of those things for more than about 1 minute when i started them.
if I can run or swim...anyone can.

i'll admit that one of the biggest driving forces in me to do those things was weight management.
i've always struggled with my weight.
and exercise helps me keep it under control.

but i've realized over the last year or so that it's not about that anymore at all.
it's truly because i love it.
and i need it...i need it for my sanity.

this also kinda scares me a little bit...to need something so badly.
so, i'm trying to take better care of myself...and not overdo it so that i don't injure anything.

i even started doing yoga once a week (that's all i can handle....)
but i'm starting to enjoy it a little bit and i really think it's good for my body to stretch and all.

i have 1 goal in finishing this triathlon.
i want to finish feeling strong.
i don't care about my time.
i just want to feel strong at the end.

i'm in pretty good shape right now.
i'm running a faster pace than i ever have before.
i'm running more miles a week than i ever have before.
if i'm going to do this...now is the time.

the day i signed up for it, my stomach was upset for the rest of the day.
and i'm sure it will be like that the day before.

but i know i can do this.
so i am.
technically, i could probably do it tomorrow...but i hope to train some towards my goal of feeling STRONG at the end.
i shouldn't have to work out for many more hours a week...i'm just going to have to bike more (right now all i'm doing is a 1 hour spinning class a week!) and run less...which i don't love...but i'll do.

what exactly is an international triathlon?? we start with a 1500 meter (a little less than a mile) swim in a lake (totally weirds me out! i only swim in a pool!!!)
these pics are from the luray website from the last 2 years

then we bike 25 miles
ok...besides not having one of those "triathlon suits" to wear...and hating wearing a cap to swim...it gives me a headache...i also don't have the "right" kind of bike. i can use the bike i have {a hybrid} but i will have to work twice as hard as the people on road bikes {they cost like $2000...not happening...you really can "buy" time in a triathlon!} hoping maybe to borrow a bike?? but, if not, i can use mine.

then we run a 10k (6.2 miles) at the end.
running is my thing.
so i love knowing that this is the last part.

am i crazy?
yes, totally.
but i'm so excited about this!!!

so...this is a real-life training plan for someone with kids and other priorities in life
{but i guess you also have to be highly motivated to workout...and slightly crazy :-)}
